Go-Ahead to launch new bus app

The Go-Ahead travel group is launching an app today to help passengers avoid busy buses.

The When2Travel tool will be available to customers in Newcastle upon Tyne (Tyne and Wear) first, before being rolled out across Manchester (Greater Manchester), Oxford (Oxfordshire), Norwich (Norfolk), Brighton (East Sussex), Crawley (West Sussex), Southampton (Hampshire), Bournemouth (Dorset), Salisbury (Wiltshire), and Plymouth (Devon).

Using AI, the app — designed with the tech firm City Swift — will show passengers how many occupied seats there are on the next bus so they can choose an emptier service and social-distance properly. (A double-decker bus that could usually carry 75 people will be limited to 15 seats.)

Katy Taylor, of Go-Ahead, said: ‘Along with the enhanced cleaning and disinfecting of buses, and by following the government advice to wash hands frequently, pay by contactless, and wear face coverings on board, customers can travel safely and with confidence.’
