At Branksome is Coy Pond Gardens, which cover about 4ha (9ac) of land. The gardens are great for walks and picnics whilst the tranquil Coy Pond itself has ducks and an island.

Upper Gardens
BOURNEMOUTH
Upper Gardens feature many unusual tree species, including a North American giant sequoia and a group of mature Persian ironwood trees. There is also a Victorian water tower — fashioned in the shape of a castle turret — and a number of wooden walkways.

Central Gardens
BOURNEMOUTH
Central Gardens, which date back to the 1870s, feature a war memorial with rose borders, heather beds, and a rhododendron walk. There are also tennis courts, a play area for children, and a pergola — added in 1990 — to commemorate the centenary of Bournemouth.

Lower Gardens

Lower Gardens feature floral displays that combine a range of colours, textures, and scents. There is also a bandstand, an aviary, and a large rock garden.

At Southbourne you will find Fisherman’s Walk. Originally the route the fishermen took down to the coast, it is now a pleasant tree-lined walk with a bandstand. There is also a garden area with a pond and fountain.

Boscombe Pier
BOURNEMOUTH
At Boscombe is Boscombe Pier. Restoration of the Grade II listed pier entrance took place in 2007. Further work saw new decking, lighting, and a central windbreak screen added to the pier itself, along with a new viewing and fishing platform. The following year saw Boscombe Pier open to the public once more.

At Boscombe is Boscombe Chine Gardens. Here you will find formal flowerbeds, large grassy areas for recreation, crazy golf, a playground, and a café. There are a variety of trees on the banks of the chine and the gardens provide a habitat for wildlife.

Alum Chine
BOURNEMOUTH
Alum Chine is the largest of four chines in Bournemouth. It has shady paths, a play area for children, a paddling pool, and a tropical garden on the cliff face.

Nothe Gardens are public gardens that overlook both Weymouth and Portland harbours. They feature a vast array of trees and established shrub beds. Picnic areas are available and there are large grassed spaces for ball games. The gardens are also home to Nothe Fort.

Situated in the village of Corfe Castle is Corfe Castle Museum. Located in the town hall, it has an iguanodon dinosaur footprint.

In South Street is Bridport Museum. This local history museum, housed in a Tudor building, has a wide range of displays.

Portland Bill Lighthouse, completed in 1906, stands at the very south of the island. A fully functioning structure, it measures 41m (135ft) tall. Visitors can climb the 153 steps to the top of the lighthouse during a guided tour, which lasts around 45 minutes.

Studland is home to the Old Harry Rocks. These are three chalk formations located at Handfast Point on the Isle of Purbeck. They mark the most easterly point of the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation) world heritage site.

At Langton Matravers is the Putlake Adventure Park. This includes both a museum and a farm, where you can have a go at bottle-feeding lambs and goats or milking a cow. There is also a dairy teashop.

On Gold Hill is Shaftesbury Museum. This features local history relics as well as the town’s button industry. There is also a fire engine from 1744.

Gold Hill

Gold Hill is a cobbled street buttressed on one side and terraced on the other. There are lovely views over the Dorset countryside from the top.

At Abbotsbury is the small St Catherine Chapel. Built entirely of stone, including the roof and panelled ceiling, it stands atop a 79-m-tall (260-ft-tall) bare hill. The walls are 1.2m (3.9ft) thick and buttressed. A Grade I listed building, it overlooks the English Channel.

At Abbotsbury is St Nicholas Church. This dates from the 14th century but has had various revisions in its time. The tower contains three bells dating from 1773. The chancel still has its plastered barrel roof and fine altarpiece. There is also some painted glass from the 15th century, a stone effigy of one of the abbots, and a Jacobean canopied pulpit. English Heritage has designated it a Grade I listed building.

At Abbotsbury is the Tithe Barn Children’s Farm. The barn — built in the 1390s — houses a farm with lots of animals as well as both open and covered play areas.

Oceanarium

Located on the seafront is the Oceanarium, an aquarium that takes visitors on a journey around the waters of the world. It features 10 re-created environments, including the Amazon, Key West, the Mediterranean, and the Great Barrier Reef.

Wareham Forest is a large conifer plantation that stretches several kilometres to the A35 road and the southern foothills of the Dorset Downs. It provides an excellent opportunity for woodland walks.

At Athelhampton is Athelhampton House. This fine example of 15th century domestic architecture features the Great Hall, Great Chamber, and the King’s Room. There are also 8ha (20ac) of beautiful grounds with walled gardens, fountains, and pavilions.

Aquarium

By The Cobb is the Aquarium. This features a collection of local living creatures of the sea and seashore. There is also old fishing gear and nautical artefacts.

At Lodmoor Country Park is the Sea Life Centre. Here you can discover the world of British marine life and enter a re-created rainforest full of exotic birds. There is also a children’s play area and splash-pool.

At Bovington Camp is The Tank Museum. Founded in 1923, it contains one of the largest collections of historic armoured fighting vehicles in the world. Exhibits span the history of tank warfare from the first tank of World War I to modern fighting machines. There are also working models, simulators, two video theatres, and displays of engines, guns, medals, uniforms, and equipment.

At Wool is Monkey World. Here in a large woodland environment, a wide variety of different primates live in natural social groups, giving visitors a unique opportunity to observe them.

At Pamphill you will find Kingston Lacy House and Park. Sir Roger Pratt (1620 – 1684) designed this 17th-century house for Sir Ralph Bankes (1631 – 1677). It has an outstanding collection of paintings.

Swanage Railway is a heritage railway on the Purbeck Line. Steam trains travel along 10km (6mi) of track from Norden (via Corfe Castle, Harman’s Cross, and Herston Halt) to Swanage.

In Edmondsham Road is the Dorset Heavy Horse Centre, which features six breeds of heavy horse as well as miniature Shetland ponies. There is also a picnic area, cafeteria, and gift shop.

At 9 Customs House Quay in the Old Harbour area is the Deep Sea Adventure & Titanic Story. It features four floors of exhibits telling the story of diving and underwater exploration from the 17th century onwards.

At Stapehill on Wimborne Road is Stapehill Abbey, Crafts, and Gardens. Here you will find magnificent gardens with many rare plants, an orchid house, and a lake. There is also a craft centre with demonstrations, a countryside museum, and a Cistercian chapel. Woodland walks are available if you fancy a bit of a stroll.

The 142-ha (350-ac) Lodmoor Country Park on the seafront road has a host of attractions for all the family. There is an RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) reserve, a steam and diesel miniature railway, go-carts, a picnic/barbecue area, and a nature reserve.

Portland Bill is a narrow promontory at the southern end of the Isle of Portland and is the southernmost point of Dorset. Noted for its rough coast, it is the only point on Portland where the limestone cliffs rise directly from the sea.

In High West Street is Dorset County Museum. Eye-catching displays include Roman remains, a reconstruction of the study of author Thomas Hardy (1840 – 1928), a geology gallery, and collections relating to Dorset’s history.

At East Lulworth is Lulworth Castle. Here you can climb the southeast tower to enjoy splendid views over the wooded park. There are also some private walks open to the public.

Situated off the A31 Wimborne bypass is Merley House Exhibition Centre & Model Museum. Located in an 18th-century mansion with Georgian plaster ceilings, it houses a collection of model toy cars, ships, aeroplanes, and trains.

At 23 – 27 High Street is the Priest’s House Museum, an award-winning local-history museum that includes mock-ups of an ironmonger’s shop and a working Victorian kitchen. There is also a beautiful walled garden.

Durlston Country Park is a 113-ha (280-ac) country park and nature reserve that stretches along the coast of the Isle of Purbeck at Durlston. Facilities include a visitor centre, café, walking trails, public toilets, car parking, and a castle containing a shop.

Nothe Fort

At the extreme end of the peninsula, through Nothe Gardens, is Nothe Fort. This Victorian fort, built 1860 – 1872, was one of the south coast defences designed to thwart any invasion by the French. Here you can explore magazines, tunnels, and ramparts. There are also guns, displays, and models.

Housed in an old power station is the Southern Electric Museum. In the generating hall there is a fully restored Bournemouth tram along with local generating and distribution equipment to help explain how the lights come on in our homes. There are also 19th and 20th century electrical appliances as well as some electricity service vehicles.

Christchurch Priory dates from 1094 and is the longest parish church in England. Its most famous relic is the Miraculous Beam. The mysterious lengthening of this piece of wood resulted in the original name of the town changing from Twynham to Christchurch.

At Poole Quay is Waterfront. This takes you on a voyage of discovery into Poole’s colourful past and will intrigue visitors of all ages. In a quayside scene you can meet Cockle Kate (1878 – 1951) in the White Hart, learn about pirate Henry Paye (c. 1364 – 1419), experience life on the Quay, and a whole lot more besides.
