Landslide kills bus passenger

A landslide killed a bus passenger in west Wales as Storm Callum tore across Britain.

Heavy rain and hurricane force winds sent rock and soil hurtling into a line of queuing traffic, sweeping 21-year-old Corey Thomas Sharpling to his death.

Witnesses said the landslide struck the young man after he stepped off the bus to watch workmen remove a fallen pine tree blocking the valley road in Cwmduad.

A farmer’s wife, who lives nearby, said: ‘If he had stayed on the bus he would have been fine; all of a sudden there was a rumbling and he was hit by a landslide.’

Mr Sharpling was on his way to work when the tragedy unfolded at 2 p.m.
