First driverless bus trial announced

A self-driving bus trial between Fife (east-central Scotland) and Edinburgh (southeastern Scotland) will become the country’s first in 2019.

The pilot will include five autonomous single-decker buses travelling across the Forth Road Bridge.

The trial will still require a driver to be on board as a backup for passenger safety, as well as to comply with UK legislation.

The UK government has awarded funding of £4.35 million to the project, which aims to be operational in 2021.
