Bus firm fined £2.3 million over crash

A bus company received a fine of £2.3 million after it ignored warnings about an ‘erratic’ driver who crashed into a supermarket in the West Midlands, killing two people.

Midland Red (South) Ltd admitted health and safety breaches after the then 77-year-old Kailash Chander smashed into a Sainsbury’s in Coventry in 2015.

Mr Chander had been driving dangerously when he mistook the accelerator for the brake, a trial of facts concluded.

Birmingham Crown Court deemed the now 80-year-old former mayor of Royal Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, unfit to stand trial due to dementia.
