Jane Austen Memorial Garden
Alton
This Regency-style garden, created outside the Assembly Rooms on the High Street, is in memory of Jane Austen (1775 – 1817). It features flowers mentioned in the novelist’s books and charity rose varieties named after both her and her home in nearby Chawton. There are also two ‘carriage benches’ — designed to recall the wheels of a horse-drawn carriage — which provide dry, comfortable spaces for people to sit in and relax.
