This service ran between two Hampshire seaports, Southampton and Lymington; it also served Lyndhurst, Hounsdown (route 56 only), and Foxhills (route 56A only).

The 56A service continues today, albeit renumbered as route 6. Whilst still run by Wilts & Dorset — now trading under the name More — buses use the livery of their sister company, Bluestar. Both firms are part of operator Go South Coast.
