Queen’s Head Bus Shelter

01 Sep 2025

Here in the Hampshire village of Burley, hidden away amongst the shade of the trees, is a brick bus shelter. The Queen’s Head, which is on the other side of the street from this stop, is a pub; originally a blacksmith’s, it dates back to 1685.

Notes

•
The photo, by Lee Wilkins, dates from 06 March 2006.
•
Wilts & Dorset’s X1 (later X35) service, which ran between Southampton and Bournemouth until the early Noughties, used to stop here. The ‘X’ in the route number, in both instances, denotes it was an Express (as in eXpress); i.e. a limited-stop service that would only pick up and drop off passengers at certain bus stops along the route.
•
Wilts & Dorset, which now trades as More, still operates the X1, but these days it runs from Lymington to Bournemouth, and no longer stops here. The ‘X’ in the route number in this instance denotes it is a cross-county service.
