01 Jun 2024

It is late summer, and we are on the upper deck of an open-top bus as it wends its way through the streets of a Dorset town.

Notes

•
The photo, by Lee Wilkins, dates from 05 Sep 2003; it shows the open-top 1A (Weymouth – Portland Bill) service run by First Hampshire & Dorset.
•
Southern National (later First Southern National) used to run this service, as route 501, with Southern Belle branding. First Hampshire & Dorset (now trading as First Wessex) then ran it as route 1A before it reverted to 501; it now has Portland Coaster branding.
•
Portland Bill, where this service terminates, is a narrow promontory at the southern end of the Isle of Portland; it is the southernmost point of Dorset.
